Free, the whole first chapter

It starts with four officers at the door.

In the spring of 2020 I spent twelve days on a psychiatric ward. Chapter one is how I got there, and what it was like inside. No summary, no setup. The chapter as it appears in the book.

Where to send it

Nineteen pages. Yours now.

The preface and chapter one, typeset the way the book is. Read it on a phone or print it, whichever you'd actually do.

One email with the chapter, and one on October 16 when the book is out. Nothing else unless you want it.

What happens after chapter one

The part I couldn't have told you then.

Chapter one ends with me walking out of the hospital into a locked-down city, with no idea what came next. I genuinely couldn't see past that afternoon.

What came next was a marriage ending after nineteen and a half years, a career of two decades ending, and one small thing I found in between: the gap between a thought arriving and deciding to follow it.

Eleven more chapters, and a practice at the end you can actually use. Out October 16.
